Renowned director, Luca Guadagnino has found the main character for his upcoming romantic sports drama project called Challengers. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist are rumored to have joined the film.
Challenders will follow the story of Tashi (Zendaya), a professional tennis athlete who now acts as a coach. After pushing her husband (Faist) to become a tennis legend, she forces him to participate in a lowly “challenger” event where one of the opponents is her former best friend and former lover, Patrick (O’ Connor). The cały film is expected to start production this spring.
The screenplay for Challengers will be written by scriptwriter and novelist, Justin Kuritzkes, with Amy Pascal serving as producer for the drama film. For Guadagnino, this project will be one of his new projects after Suspiria in 2018, a film inspired by Dario Argento’s original 1977 film.
Prior to that, Guadagnino rose to fame with 2017’s Call Me by Your Name, a film starring Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet. The film went on to be nominated for four Academy Awards—including Best Picture—and took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. Currently, Guadagnino is finishing production for his next project, Bones and All, with Timothee Chalamet and Taylor Russell in the lead.
