Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise reveals that he dresses incognito and sneaks into theaters to watch every new movie. Maverick is a many-years-later follow-up to the actor’s 1986 hit Top Gun, in which he stars as the hotshot fighter pilot Maverick. The new film sees the character being recruited to train a new team of top pilots, including Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of a fallen comrade who resents Maverick for his father’s death. The cast of the film, which is coming to theaters soon on May 27, 2022, also includes Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Val Kilmer returning as Iceman.
Top Gun was a hit from very early in his career, before Cruise began starring in the Mission: Impossible franchise. As each entry of that series progressed, he became more and more immersed in performing his character Ethan Hunt’s radical, jaw-dropping stunts himself. This included hanging onto the side of a plane mid-flight and sliding down the outside of the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building in the world. Cruise has taken this methodology to Top Gun: Maverick, which will feature the star actually piloting the plane he flies onscreen. He also insisted that his castmates receive training so they were able to perform challenging stunts properly, though stunt pilots were used for the other Top Gun cast members when necessary. Although Vulture’s coverage of Cruise’s Top Gun press performance at Cannes highlights how boring it has been, he did drop a majorly intriguing statement during the film festival. Not only does he put his all into making movies, he puts his all into watching them as well. During a Top Gun event, he revealed that he tries to sneak into the theater to see every new movie that comes out, saying “I put on my cap and I sit in the audience.”
This revelation also ties into Tom Cruise’s proven love of the theatrical experience. In addition to filming a video blasting television motion smoothing in 2018, he also shared a video of himself putting on a mask to go see Christopher Nolan’s film Tenet in theaters in August 2020. Whether or not he truly means that he sees “every” film is up to interpretation, but it’s clear that the experience of the cinema is deeply important to him. This news is delightful on its own terms, but it also lends a new element of intrigue to the moviegoing experience. Tom Cruise’s whereabouts are frequently reported, so anyone going to the movies in a town where he’s currently filming or staying should be on high alert for anyone in a ballcap trying not to be noticed. It might just be the Top Gun: Maverick star himself enjoying the show.
Hobbit Actors Have A Lord of The Rings
Lord of the Rings stars Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan reunite in real life and The four actors who played the lead Hobbits in the Lord of the Rings have reunited in an adorable photo. Lord of the Rings is the massively popular film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson that was adapted from the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy work of the same name. The epic and expensive ensemble films, which included The Fellowship of the Rings in 2001, The Two Towers in 2002, and The Return of the King in 2003, dominated the pop culture sphere of the time, consistently landing in the box office top 10, making stars of its many cast members, and winning a collected 17 Oscars, including Best Picture for The Return of the King.
The core figures at the center of the trilogy’s elaborate plotlines were the four Hobbits. Elijah Wood played Frodo Baggins, the young Hobbit who is charged with taking the dangerous Ring of Power to Mordor to be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. His main companion was Samwise Gamgee, his steadfast best friend who would prove to be one of his most important and faithful allies. Also along for the ride are Merry and Pippin, played by Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd respectively. The two mischievous hobbits end up being split up from their friends and going on their very own coming-of-age journey across the vast and dangerous terrain of Middle-Earth. The fan account Terra-média Brasil shared a photo on Twitter revealing that all four Hobbits got together for a meal recently. The caption, when translated from the original Portuguese, reads “Hobbits do not part. Look at the meeting of the little ones.” The foursome is currently gathered in Florida to participate in a panel run by Monaghan titled “Friendship Onion” at Mega Con Orlando.
Since filming Lord of the Rings, the four actors have not had much of a chance to work with one another. Other than Monaghan and Boyd, who both made uncredited cameos in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, most of the four haven’t shared a credit together other than reunions or talk shows since 2011. It makes sense considering the different directions their careers have taken, including Wood working at his production company SpectreVision and Astin appearing on Netflix’s Stranger Things. Lord of the Rings fans will certainly be thrilled that the bond between the four actors has remained strong even two decades after the release of the films that made them stars. Their adventure making the film was certainly almost as intense as the one their characters endured, and that bond has proven its ability to stand the test of time. While the actors are not involved in the upcoming Amazon series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, this reunion feels very fitting with the upcoming resurgence of Middle-Earth material.
