Synopsis of the latest film Nightmare Alley by Guillermo Del Torro

Guillermo del Torro’s latest work, Nightmare Alley, has just aired on Indonesian cinema chains. This neo-noir thriller genre film features a row of well-known actors and actresses.

Apart from Bradley Cooper, this film also stars Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Willem Dafoe, Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn. This film is an adaptation of the old novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham which was published in 1946.

Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is the second film adaptation of the novel, having previously been adapted on the big screen in 1947. However, according to Guillermo del Torro, this film is not a remake of the film that was released in 1947. He said that this film is a direct adaptation of the novel Nightmare Alley, rather than the old film.

In the process of writing this film, the director of Shape of Water took Kim Morgan. This film tells the story of Stanton Carlisle, played by Bradley Cooper.

Based on the official Nightmare Alley synopsis released by Searchlight Pictures, Stanton is an ambitious traveling carnival officer who has a talent for manipulating others.

With that ability, he deceived the wealthy elite of New York in 1940. Until finally, he met a mysterious psychiatrist played by Cate Blanchett and unknowingly became his toughest opponent.

Bradley Cooper recently revealed one of the toughest scenes he played while filming the movie Nightmare Alley. He shared that experience during an interview on the KCRW podcast, The Business. Citing information from People, Wednesday (19/1/2022), the toughest scene he had to do was naked while filming in front of the crew for up to six hours.

“I feel ‘Wow’. That’s very heavy,” said the eight-time Academy Award nominee. The scene was also done with Toni Collete, who was currently filming the first day.

Although heavy, Bradley Cooper was actually not bothered by the scene and indeed already knew it after reading the script for Nightmare Alley. Moreover, with the story offered, according to him, this film does require the cast to be emotionally naked as well.

In the film Nightmare Alley, Bradley played Stanton “Stan” Carlisle. He is told as an ambitious carnival member who has a talent for manipulating other people. Previously, the director Guillermo del Torro also briefly shared his reasons for liking neo-nori films like Nightmare Alley.

At an online press conference held by Disney recently, he revealed why he is so in love with the horror and noir genres. “When I started with the short films I made as a kid, I just wanted to make horror films or fantasy or noir. These were all my first loves,” she said.
