Sol Kyung Gu as President in ‘Kingmaker’

Senior actor Sol Kyung Gu was recently interviewed ahead of the premiere of his latest film, Kingmaker. Reporting from the page of The Korea Herald, Sol Kyung Gu said that the screening of the film was not intended to be aired ahead of the March 9 presidential election.

However, due to a spike in Covid-19 cases at the end of 2021, the release of “Kingmaker online” had to be postponed until 2022.

In Kingmaker movie online, Sol Kyung Gu plays the character of Kim Woon Beom, an opposition party candidate who dreams of becoming president.

When interviewed, he said, when he received the script for the film, his character was not named Kim Woon Beom, but the name of the former president who was elected in 1998, namely Kim Dae Jung. Then, he asked the director to change his name to be more comfortable in acting, “When I first received the script, my character’s name was Kim Dae Jung. I asked the director to change it because there was too much pressure.”

The Seocheon-born actor felt that it would be more flexible for him if his name was different. In addition, he can also develop the character he brings.

Even though his name was different, it wasn’t easy for him to portray a character based on a figure that everyone knew.

Actress Song Yoon Ah’s husband said the voice and tone of voice should also receive special attention.

Finally, it was decided to minimize the use of the Mokpo dialect. When asked what his favorite line in his latest political film is, he said, Jo Woo Jin’s line is his favorite. He felt that his co-star’s dialogue could explain what was happening in the Korean political scene.

The line from the line is, “When he talks about achieving the great good, he says something like ‘You have your own greater good, I have mine. And the word justice is for the victor'”.

These words are considered sufficient to explain why the parties fought each other fiercely during the election.

The Merciless was screened at the 70th Cannes Film Festival in 2017. Through that film, he won the “Best Actor” award at the 54th Grand Bell Awards and the 37th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.

After Kingmaker, he will star in the film “Gil Bok Soon” directed by Byun Sung Hyun. “I really like director Byun Sung Hyun’s films. ‘Kingmaker’ and ‘The Merciless’ are two different stories and ‘Kill Bok Soon also tells a different story’, he said. He also admitted that he was always curious about what stories the director was trying to convey through his works.

Kingmaker is a film set in the 1960s and 1970s based on a true story. Sol Kyung Gu opposite Lee Sun Kyun who becomes Seo Chang Dae, a great election strategist.

Besides Lee Sun Kyun, he also played with Yoo Jae Myung, Jo Woo Jin, Park In Hwan, Bae Jong Ok, and Kim Sung Oh.

The film “Kingmaker” is scheduled to be released on January 26 in South Korea.
