Shazam! Fury of the Gods Finds Billy Batson Uncertain

As revealed at SDCC, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will find Asher Angel’s character Billy Batson worried about his life changing once he turns 18. Shazam! Fury of the Gods will see Billy Batson (Asher Angel) concerned about his future. Director David F. Sandberg’s first Shazam came out in 2019, chronicling the story of Angel’s orphaned teenager as he develops the ability to transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) after a run-in with an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Shazam was a commercial and critical success, grossing $366 million and garnering praise for its vibrant, cheerful sense of fun. A sequel was greenlit soon after, and after numerous scheduling changes, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will debut in theaters this December.

The movie is being touted as a bigger and more action-packed follow-up to the original Shazam. Fury of the Gods has a pair of exciting new supervillains – Hespera, played by Helen Mirren, and Kalypso, played by Lucy Liu- and costume upgrades for the entire Shazam family. Those upgrades will be supported by a time jump, as Shazam 2 will take place two years after the first movie. For Billy, this means he will be in a new place in his life as he and his siblings get older.

Shazam 2 is set to have a cameo from Wonder Woman, and while it may be a joke, the DCEU needs to pay it off by having Shazam join the Justice League. New footage of Shazam: Fury of the Gods shown off at CinemaCon features a cameo from Wonder Woman – meaning that Shazam now needs to join the Justice League. Although the cameo is clearly a joke, it’s not the first time Shazam has had a comedic meeting with a big-time hero after meeting Superman in the first Shazam! movie. Yet while these random appearances at first translate as superhero spoofs and jokes, having Shazam actually join the Justice League in the future would be the perfect payoff to these cameos.

Shazam 2 follows the titular hero as he teams up with his now-superpowered siblings and takes on the villainous Daughters of Atlas. Shazam 2’s new Wonder Woman footage is described as a dream sequence where Shazam is on a date with Wonder Woman. She stops and turns around as she begins to walk away, revealing that she is not Gal Gadot but actually the wizard Merlin. While the context of this footage isn’t entirely clear, a cameo from Wonder Woman and the debut of Merlin nonetheless proves how much bigger Shazam 2 will be compared to its predecessor. Wonder Woman appearing in Shazam 2 and Superman having appeared in Shazam, cameos from Justice League members may become a recurring joke in the series. While this is great in its own right, the DCEU can further pay off these jokes in an even more substantial way by having Shazam join the Justice League. Shazam has been a longtime member of the Justice League in the original DC comics, so having him join the DCEU’s team wouldn’t be a stretch by any means. In addition, Shazam has connections with Superman and Wonder Woman, and since he is one of the DCEU’s most powerful heroes, he would fit right in. Rather than adding new heroes to the DCEU, the Justice League should therefore employ Shazam, paying off these cameos by connecting Shazam to the broader universe.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ SDCC panel on Saturday, where Billy’s new journey in the sequel was teased. As explained by the panelists, since Billy is approaching adulthood, he is worried about the future. He’s apprehensive about how his life will change when he turns 18. Because of that uncertainty, Billy is trying to live in the moment and be with his family while having fun. Family has been an essential theme in the Shazam franchise. Billy lost his biological family, but could still find love and compassion from his foster siblings and parents. With adulthood calling, it makes sense for him to be afraid of potentially losing the relationships he so greatly values. By the time Fury of the Gods picks up, Billy and his siblings will have settled into their new superpowered situation. However, it might not last forever, and that will likely leave Billy adrift and worried. The new Shazam 2 trailer teases a greater focus on family, hinting this is a conflict Billy will work through with the help of his loved ones. The movie might also reveal some surprising changes to Billy’s life, perhaps leading him to become his own man and figure out his identity outside of his foster family.
