Runner Pradeep Mehra in Next Film

Akshay Kumar reacted to the memes on playing midnight runner Pradeep Mehra in his next film, saying he doesn’t mind as that means he is still relevant. Actor Akshay Kumar is no stranger to memes and jokes featuring him and his choices for taking up inspirational films and biopics. The star takes it in good spirit, and looks at it as a ‘badge of honour’. It began with memes on Akshay playing Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra last year, to 126-year-old Swami Sivananda and now 19-year-old midnight runner Pradeep Mehra.

Speaking about it to Hindustan Times, Akshay said, “If the meme is funny, I laugh. Aur nahi toh kya, normal hai…joke acha hota hai toh aap bhi haste ho na (What else, it’s normal. If the joke is good, laugh)? And who doesn’t like a good laugh?”Akshay has been a part of a slew of patriotic and issue-based films, including Airlift, Pad Man, and Mission Mangal. This has become fodder of much entertainment for social media users.

Akshay is glad about being the center of these memes as he feels that it means that he is still relevant among the audience. He says that he ‘couldn’t be happier’ as he believes that he has created a space for himself where he can fit into such roles. “It’s what has helped me stay relevant and in the memory of my audience. The one featuring Pradeep, I saw that one, it’s a still from my upcoming film Raksha Bandhan,” he said.

Akshay was last seen in Bachchhan Paandey, which did not do the glowing business it was expected to do at the box office. He revealed that the raging success of The Kashmir Files was one of the reasons why the film did not do well, but emphasised that he did not blame Vivek Agnihotri’s film at all, and called it a ‘storm’.

Akshay Kumar has a series of films in the pipeline, including Prithviraj, Ram Setu and Raksha Bandhan.

Actor Akshay Kumar said that he was highly impressed by director Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’. He praised Vivek for bringing forward the truth behind the heartbreaking exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley during the 1990s to public, but however, joked “it’s a different thing that it has also sabotaged his latest movie ‘Bachchan Pandey’”.

In a video, shared by Vivek on his official Twitter account, Akshay said, “The Kashmir Files came like a huge wave in the country that shook all of us. Wo aur baat hai ki meri picture ko bhi dooba diya.”

Reacting to the video, Vivek said, “Thanks Akshay Kumar for your appreciation for #TheKashmirFiles.”

Akshay Kumar was speaking at a film festival when he showered praises on The Kashmir Files, adding that it tells a painful story. Director Vivek Agnihotri has thanked Akshay in a new tweet. In the video that Vivek shared on Twitter, Akshay Kumar said, “Hum sabko desh ki kahaniyan kehni hai, Kuch jaani maani, kuch ankahi, ansuni. Jaise Vivek ji ne Kashmir Files bana kar ek bahut bade dardnaak sach ko saamne rakha hai. Ye film ek aisi wave ban kar aayi jisne hum sabko jhinjhor kar diya hai . Wo aur baat haiki meri picture ko bhi duba diya hai. (All of us, we want to tell stories of our country. Some may be well-known, others not as much. For example, Vivek has made The Kashmir Files that brought a painful truth to the fore and shook us all. That it caused my film to flop is a different issue).”

Akshay was speaking at the ongoing Chitra Bharati Film Festival in Bhopal. The festival is being held from March 25 to March 27 at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of of Journalism and Communication. Made at a small budget of ₹20 crore, The Kashmir Files met trade expectations when it made an opening collection of ₹3.5 crore. However, the graph of the film’s collections thereafter have proved to be unexpected. Within 15 days of the release, The Kashmir Files has earned ₹211.83 in India alone.

Meanwhile, Akshay’s Bachchhan Paandey hit theatres a week after The Kashmir Files and had a rather disappointing show at the ticket windows. At the end of week one, the film had failed to cross even the ₹50 crore mark. note: CODA – I segni del cuore streaming ita
