Physical activity is good for heart health

Cardiologist and Blood Vessel Specialist Rio Probo Kaneko Sp.JP, FIHA said people need to do physical activity and exercise regularly because it is good for heart health.

“Being active, physical activity and sports is good for heart health,” said Rio Probo when contacted in Jakarta, Monday.

Doctors who practice at Prof. Hospital. Dr. Margono Soekarjo Purwokerto, Central Java, added that when a person does physical activity, the heart will increase the amount of blood pumped every minute.

“Or called cardiac output which is normally around five liters per minute to 25-30 liters per minute. So that blood flow throughout the body gets better,” he said.

Doctor Rio added that physical activity or exercise also causes the body’s adaptive response, in which the heart experiences an increase in the amount of blood storage in the chambers and the ability to contract the heart muscle is getting better.

“This increases the amount of blood that can be pumped by the heart with each beat and decreases the resting heart rate because the target need for blood to be pumped throughout the body remains met at a slower rate,” he said.

He added that several studies have also shown that adaptation to the heart is associated with improved heart health and decreased mortality from cardiovascular disease.

He also reiterated that currently the government continues to strengthen the healthy living community movement or Germas to prevent various health problems, including preventing heart disease.

“People need to implement the healthy living community movement in their daily life, because it has many benefits, including to maintain heart health conditions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy for Coordination for Health Quality Improvement and Population Development at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture Agus Suprapto said the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture plays an active role in socializing the importance of preventing heart disease to the public.

He explained that the government continues to intensify the Germas campaign in accordance with the Presidential Instruction of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1 of 2017 concerning the Healthy Living Community Movement in order to encourage the public to prioritize a promotive and preventive healthy paradigm.

The Healthy Living Community Movement includes seven steps, namely doing physical activity, eating fruit and vegetables, not smoking, not consuming alcoholic beverages, conducting regular health checks, maintaining environmental cleanliness, and using latrines.
