New Worlds Season 2 Is Already Strange in Avoiding J.J. Abrams

The role he has to play in Star Trek’s future, giving his Pike is now life meaning and importance that he never had in the Abrams movies.

A Quality of Mercy first glimpse of Paul Wesley as Captain James T. Kirk, when he joins forces with Captain Pike (Anson Mount) to investigate a Romulan attack on a Federation outpost. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ season 1 finale proves that season 2 will avoid the failings of Captain Pike in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies.

Scotty Has To Be In Strange New Worlds Season 2 Now, Right? The familiar voice of Scotty is heard in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ finale. Does this mean the iconic Engineer is joining the show in season 2?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ season 1 finale, will Scotty join the USS Enterprise in season 2? Strange New Worlds’ finale, A Quality of Mercy, is a time travel jaw-dropper where Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is sent 7 years into the future to live through his own version of the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode, Balance of Terror. In this reality, Pike was never critically injured and remained in command of the Enterprise so he faced the Romulans’ new cloaked Bird-of-Prey instead of Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). As such, there were new personnel on the Enterprise in this future, which includes Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott.

Pike’s Enterprise needs a new Chief Engineer after Hemmer (Bruce Horak) died in Strange New Worlds episode 9. Hemmer came aboard the Enterprise at the end of Strange New Worlds’ premiere to join Pike’s new five-year mission. The blind Aenar quickly became the mentor of Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and her education from Hemmer included much more than just learning how Engineering operates.

Strange New Worlds’ season 1 finale is an alternate timeline version of the classic Star Trek: The Original Series episode Balance of Terror, which ends in an all-out war due to Pike’s peaceful intentions presenting the Federation as weak to the villainous Romulan Praetor (Carolyn Scott.) In the Star Trek episode Balance of Terror, however, Kirk destroyed the Romulan Bird-of-Prey before things spiraled out of control, as depicted in Pike’s alternate timeline.

Strange New Worlds season 1, Pike has pondered changing his eventual fate. The finale shows him that if he remains as Captain of the Enterprise and never has his accident then Kirk will never avert the war, and Spock (Ethan Peck) will die decades before he can negotiate eventual peace with the Romulans. It’s a revelation that highlights the importance of Captain Pike to both Kirk and Spock, lending the character a bigger impact on Star Trek mythology than the Bruce Greenwood version of Star Trek’s Kelvin Timeline movies.

Enterprise as a fully-fledged crewmember in season 2, presumably at the request of Pike. In one of the finale’s closing scenes, Pike is consulting Kirk’s service record, having clearly been impressed by the young captain in the alternate timeline. In the Kelvin Timeline, Pike was also responsible for bringing Kirk aboard the Enterprise, essentially seeding Kirk and Spock’s iconic partnership. However, rather than serving the expository purpose of simply putting Kirk where he needs to be, as in the 2009 movie, the Pike of Strange New Worlds is now aware of the galactic import of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.

Uhura is a damaged soul who didn’t feel she truly belonged in Starfleet. Hemmer counseled Uhura to make permanent bonds with her friends on the Enterprise, and the Aenar proved his own words when Hemmer sacrificed his life to save his crewmates from the Gorn. Hemmer’s noble death leaves a void on the Enterprise as well as the critical role of Chief Engineer that has yet to be filled in Strange New Worlds’ season 1 finale.

Strange New Worlds’ finale but the familiar Scottish accent and his claim to Spock (Ethan Peck) that he’s not a miracle worker was unmistakably Mr. Scott’s. It makes sense that Scotty is the Enterprise’s Chief Engineer during Pike’s version of Balance of Terror since he also had that post on Kirk’s Enterprise in TOS. The question is whether Scotty will actually join Strange New Worlds in season 2 to succeed Hemmer as Chief Engineer. Star Trek canon is vague about Scotty’s Starfleet record before he joined Kirk’s Enterprise so there’s leeway for Mr. Scott to come aboard Pike’s ship and simply remain at his post when Kirk takes over.

Scotty’s Voice Cameo Means For Strange New Worlds’ willingness to incorporate other Star Trek legacy characters and position them for their eventual roles aboard Captain Kirk’s Enterprise bodes well for future cameos. Now that Scotty has been acknowledged, the three remaining icons from Kirk’s Enterprise yet to be seen in Strange New Worlds are Dr. Leonard McCoy, Hikaru Sulu, and Pavel Chekov. Curiously, McCoy was never referenced in Strange New Worlds’ finale, even though it’s reasonable to assume Bones was Captain Kirk’s Chief Medical Officer on the USS Farragut. Chekov is the youngest of Kirk’s crew and he may not even be in Starfleet Academy yet during Strange New Worlds’ era circa 2259.
