Natalie Holt Talks Batgirls Disappointing Cancellation

Ive been working on it for a year. So yeah, pretty sad whats happened to it. Batgirls shocking cancellation, DC fans are still recovering from that disheartening news. With every new behind-the-scenes image or plot detail shared by the likes of star Leslie Grace or directors Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, the films fate only gets harder to swallow. There were a lot of things to get excited about when it came to Batgirl, but one of the lesser known tidbits was that Loki composer Natalie Holt was doing the score for the film. Now Holt has broken her silence over the films cancellation.

In an interview with Discussing Film Holt was asked about if she had already begun working on her score for Batgirl which she replied, I had written about an hour and a half of music. Ive been working on it for a year. So yeah, pretty sad whats happened to it. I was on set last Christmas, Adil and Bilall really loved Loki and thats why I got picked to do the score for Batgirl. So its a shame that its not going to be out there in the world after all that time, like having spent a year working on it. Yeah, pretty disappointing.

Holt was then asked if there was anything she would want to share about her work on the film, but she replied, I dont know. I think its a massive shame. Its been a pleasure to work with the people involved, but thats all I can say. There have been a lot of soul crushing responses to the Batgirl news. Seeing Holts take only adds to that somber feeling. Holt has quietly become one of the best composers in the business today with her score for the Disney+ series Loki and Obi-Wan Kenobi being her standout work.

Loki , Holt gave this fresh sci-fi, almost John Carpenter vibe, to the MCU and it is arguably the best overall score in the universe. Because of that, it was going to be exciting to see what flavor she brought to the Batgirl character and the DC Universe as a whole. The film was set to further establish Michael Keatons Batman in the DCEU while introducing lesser known villains like Firefly and Killer Moth to a larger audience for the very first time. Again, it would have been cool to hear what kind of sound Holt was going to give each of those iconic characters.

The Cursed History of Batgirl in Live-Action. Though shes a famous face in the comics, Barbara Gordon/Batgirl has not fared well in live-action media. Batgirl has been a part of the Batman lore for more than 60 years. A version of the character, attributed to the alter-ego of Bette Kane, was introduced as early as April 1961, while the most famous incarnation of the character, with the alter-ego of Barbara Gordon, would be introduced just a few years later in 1967. Interestingly, the Gordon incarnation of Batgirl would be created at the behest of producers of the live-action Batman TV show starring Adam West. Gordons Batgirl was launched in comics and the third season of Batman approximately at the same time, with the character being portrayed on-camera by Yvonne Craig.

With these origins, the most famous iteration of Batgirl has been intertwined with the world of live-action storytelling since the very beginning. Tragically, despite having origins rooted beyond the world of the comics and her enduring popularity, Batgirl has not fared well in live-action media. Whether its movies or TV shows, Barbara Gordons Batgirl has been left behind in the expansive superhero media landscape.

A key reason for why has to do with the reason the Bette Kane version of Batgirl was abandoned in the first place. Batgirl was removed because the character was perceived as too ridiculous by the comics editors. While Gordons Batgirl would subsequently reappear in the comics in a recurring capacity after she was introduced, fears of being perceived as preposterous kept curbing further appearances of the character in outside media. Its a similar phenomenon that Patrick Willems noted surrounds Robin; in a desire to be cool, a lot of Batman media outside the comics has eschewed a critical character in Batmans lore.
