After the success of the film SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME which managed to set a Box Office record, this time Marvel and Sony will return with their next film. That film is MORBIUS starring Jared Leto.
Jared Leto will play an antihero named Michael Morbius, who tries to treat a rare blood disease, but it only makes him more familiar with the darkness within him. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, MORBIUS also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson.
For those of you who have been waiting for this film since 2 years ago, it seems that you have to be even more patient, because Sony has just postponed the release date of Morbius movie. So no need to linger anymore, let’s see the info here.
Not the First Time
This is not the first, second or third time the release date of MORBIUS has had to be delayed. The film was supposed to be released on July 10, 2020, but COVID-19 forced MORBIUS to be pushed back several times starting from July 31, 2020, March 19, 2021, October 8, 2021, and finally moving to January 21, 2022, before finally being moved to April 1.
Although there is no reason why this film was postponed. However, Omicron’s potential to reduce the number of viewers could be one of the reasons. On this new release date, MORBIUS will face off against EASTER SUNDAY, a comedy film starring Jimmy O. Yang and Tiffany Haddish, and the thriller THE CONTRACTOR starring Chris Pine.
Although there is still no sign of Spider-Man, but we can see the presence of Michael Keaton who previously played the role of Vulture, so for those of you who still don’t know anything about MORBIUS, here are 4 things you must know before finally releasing next year .
1. Plot of Morbius
The film will tell the story of Michael Morbius as he tries to fight a rare blood condition, he takes it a step further by experimenting with bat DNA in an attempt to heal himself, ultimately turning him into a vampire.
Leto told of the character in an interview with Variety’s Actor on Actors, “I was drawn to this role because he went on a journey from death to finding a cure for this disease and becoming very healthy, and then undergoing such changes that he became terrible,” he said. “So it’s a little bit like Jekyll and Hyde, which are classic roles, of course.”
2. Cast of Morbius
In terms of cast, Jared Leto will play the lead in MORBIUS, which was created in 1971 by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane. This character actually started out as a villain in the comics before turning into an anti-hero.
Besides Leto, there is also Matt Smith who will join him in MORBIUS, playing Loxias Crow, the film villain and Morbius’ best friend who suffers from the same blood disease. There’s also Jared Harris, Adria Arjona and Tyrese Gibson.
Gibson will play the character of Simon Stroud and will use a high-tech mechanical arm in the film. He reportedly signed a three-picture contract when he joined the film.
Meanwhile, the presence of Tom Hardy in this film is still being questioned because Hardy is still not seen in the trailer. But the director Daniel Espinosa revealed that Hardy will also be present in this Marvel film after slipping up in his interview with MovieZine.
3. Michael Keaton’s Presence
In the first trailer for the MORBIUS film, Sony featured Michael Keaton’s Vulture. MORBIUS is actually the same as Tom Hardy’s version of VENOM which is a spin-off of SPIDER-MAN. But the presence of Michael Keaton changed everything. Because Keaton previously played the villain in Disney’s SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.
Vulture’s final scene in the MCU is the mid-credits scene in SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING, where he is serving his sentence in prison. He made contact with Mac Gargan, who eventually became the Scorpion in the comics. He asks Toomes about Spider-Man’s true identity, which Vulture surprisingly denies, denying that Peter Parker was his son’s friend at school.
Keaton’s presence isn’t the only SPIDER-MAN reference. A newspaper featured in the trailer references the villains Rhino and Black Cat who both appeared in The AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.
Even more confusing, it looks like the word ‘killer’ is crossed over the poster of Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man. We’ll have to see how the film goes to know if this is just a regular easter egg or if a multiverse connecting multiple universes is going to happen. Sony has been hard at work in the superhero genre, with MORBIUS, the VENOM sequel and Olivia Wilde’s secret project reportedly working on SPIDER-WOMAN.
