Justice League Was An Awful Experience For Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck reveals that his experience on the set of Justice League was awful, leading to his decision to hang up the role of Batman.

Ben Affleck says filming Justice League was an “awful” experience. The actor first played the role of Batman in the 2016 film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then reprised his role in Justice League the following year. With Zack Snyder’s Justice League releasing in 2021, Affleck has had his fair share of time with the Caped Crusader. He will also star in The Flash this November alongside Batman alum, Michael Keaton.

Affleck’s turn as Bruce Wayne was met with positive fan reception after the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With the release of Justice League, many were excited to see the all-star DC heroes: Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). The film, however, was hit with multiple setbacks that cumulated into a finished product with varying reception. HBO Max’s venture into Zack Snyder’s Justice League saw a positive change for the DCEU. The experience definitely had a major impact on Affleck’s career trajectory. note: Annette (2021) Stream auf Deutsch [HD]

In an interview with LA Times, Affleck reveals that shooting Justice League was an awful for him. He clears the air that it was not the film itself that made the event harder, but the convergence of conflicts in his private life and filming issues. At the time of production, Affleck was in the middle of a divorce with actress Jennifer Garner. Along with the tragic death of Zack Snyder’s daughter, which brought on director and screenwriter Joss Whedon to finish reshoots, the overall experience became overwhelming for the actor. note: Die Addams Family 2 (2021) Stream auf Deutsch [HD]

It was really “Justice League” that was the nadir for me. That was a bad experience because of a confluence of things: my own life, my divorce, being away too much, the competing agendas and then [director] Zack [Snyder]’s personal tragedy [Snyder’s daughter Autumn died by suicide in 2017] and the reshooting. It just was the worst experience. It was awful. It was everything that I didn’t like about this. That became the moment where I said, “I’m not doing this anymore.” It’s not even about, like, “Justice League” was so bad. Because it could have been anything. note: The French Dispatch (2021) Stream auf Deutsch [HD]

Justice League may have been the final straw for the actor. With The Flash being his only upcoming Bruce Wayne appearance, the actor has shifted focus to non-IP work. His latest film, The Last Duel, directed by Ridley Scott and co-written by long-time writing partner, Matt Damon, notoriously bombed at the box office. This news, however, does not seem to slow Affleck down as his upcoming projects, The Tender Bar, directed by George Clooney, and Deep Water, directed by Adrian Lyne, are a step in a new direction for the actor. note: Nightmare Alley (2021) Stream auf Deutsch [HD]

Many large Hollywood productions go through many trials to get to the final stage in front of audiences in the way Justice League did. The COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions, and differences in direction between the studio and the creative team can all contribute to a rocky production cycle. Affleck had a successful turn as Batman, and fans can look forward to his latest portrayal when The Flash premieres later this year on November 4, 2022. With many actors returning to previous superhero roles recently, this may not truly be the last fans see of Affleck’s Batman. note: Die wundersame Welt des Louis Wain (2022) Stream auf Deutsch [HD]
