While confirming she isn’t in John Wick 4, Halle Berry strongly hints there could be a spin-off in the works centered on her character Sofia.
Halle Berry hints there could be a John Wick spin-off ahead for her Parabellum character Sofia. Right now, the John Wick franchise is in the middle of its longest hiatus yet, but it has many things in the works. Most recently, John Wick 4 moved from May 2022 to March 2023, officially putting its release nearly two years later than it was originally planned. That movie will see Keanu Reeves’ titular assassin teaming up with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) to take down the High Table once and for all.
Many details about John Wick 4 remain a mystery, but at least one thing is clear right now: Berry won’t be back. The Oscar winner made her franchise debut in 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum as Sofia, the manager of Casablanca’s Continental Hotel. Overall, Berry had a small role in John Wick: Chapter 3, yet she made quite an impression thanks to her scene-stealing dogs and her barely touched-upon history with Wick. Sofia helped him when no one else would because of his excommunicado status, and it’s clear there could be more story where she’s concerned.
And it just might be that more Sofia is what fans will get. Berry recently seemed to hint at a John Wick spin-off for her character while promoting her new film Moonfall with IGN. First, Berry confirmed she isn’t in John Wick 4. Then she went on to add, “There could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie. So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.” Berry also said this mystery project would be “putting some ointment on a little sore,” referring to her disappointment over a cancelled James Bond spin-off that was supposed to involve her character Jinx.
Though nothing has been announced publicly, there is a really good chance a Sofia spin-off is in the works. The John Wick franchise is already expanding with a television show centered around the history of the Continental and Ballerina, a movie starring Ana de Armas. A Sofia-centric movie would further expand the world of assassins and also give Berry the chance to shine. There are several places where a project like this could go; it might explore Sofia’s life before Wick, or it could pick up with what happened to her after she left him in the desert. The possibilities are endless.
Though Berry’s comments seem pretty certain about another John Wick spin-off being in the works, it might be best to wait for the official announcement before considering it a done deal. One has to wonder why it hasn’t been announced just yet, though it could be that the many delays for John Wick 4 has slowed down the development of other projects in the franchise. If that’s the case, the Sofia movie could be revealed later this year, or perhaps even closer to John Wick 4’s official debut. Sofia’s life would be an interesting story to tell, so here’s hoping it truly does happen someday soon.

John Wick 3 character might return in spin-off movie
In John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Halle Berry’s Sofia Al-Azwar proved herself a useful, ass-kicking ally to Keanu Reeves’ titular killer as well as a fellow lover of dogs. Now, the Oscar-winning actress is hinting that her character could return in a spin-off film.
During an interview with IGN, Berry confirmed that Sofia will not appear in John Wick: Chapter 4 but that she might be reprising the role in a film set in the same universe.
“There could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie,” Berry said. “So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.”
EW has reached out to director Chad Stahelski for more information on a possible spin-off and will update if we hear back.
Readers with long memories may be experiencing déjà vu on learning about the possibility of Berry starring in a movie spun off from a hugely successful action franchise. After playing the agent Jinx in the 2002 James Bond movie Die Another Day, the actress looked set to reprise that role in a film based around the character but the project never made it to the big screen.
“It was very disappointing,” Berry told Variety in 2020. “It was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”
The actress was presumably thinking of the aborted Jinx movie when she told IGN that a film about Sofia would be “putting some ointment on a little sore.”
John Wick: Chapter 4 will be released March 24, 2023. See the film’s release announcement video below:
