Actor and singer Hinton Battle has died aged 67 following a prolonged sickness.

The German-born American star – who originated the position of the scarecrow in Broadway’s The Wiz, handed away on Tuesday at Cedars Sinai Medical Middle in Los Angeles, a consultant confirmed to THR.

Battle made his Broadway debut in 1975 within the the unique manufacturing of Broadway’s The Wiz – a job taken on by Michael Jackson within the 1978 movie.

He received three Tony Awards within the featured actor in a musical class for Subtle Girls (1981), The Faucet Dance Child (1984) and Miss Saigon (1991).

Battle performed Wayne in 2006 film musical Dreamgirls alongside Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce – having starred within the Broadway musical – and landed SAG and Critics Alternative nominations for his work within the ensemble of the hit movie.

Oscar-winner Hudson took to X to pay tribute to him and fellow late Broadway star Chita Rivera, writing: ‘We misplaced two irreplaceable Broadway icons this week. Chita Rivera and Hinton Battle ! I’ll at all times be glad about their distinctive artistry and impression and the way in which our lives intersected! Relaxation nicely, legends!’

Hinton is survived by his sisters, Eddie and Lettie Battle and his nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was  born in Neubrücke, Hoppstädten-Weiersbach, West Germany, a part of the Baumholder Military Army Neighborhood, and raised in Washington, D.C. and New York Metropolis together with his homemaker mom and US Military Officer father.

Having proven an inherent ability for dance aged 9, he studied ballet for 3 years at  the Jones-Haywood College of Ballet.

The star then obtained a scholarship to The College of American Ballet the place he studied till the age of fifteen beneath George Balanchine. 

He debuted in his breakthrough The Wiz position in January 1975 at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre.

Battle’s different Broadway starring roles included Dancin’, Chicago (Billy Flynn), and Ragtime (Coalhouse Walker Jr.).

 His position in The Faucet Dance Child additionally earned Hinton the NAACP Award, and the Fred Astaire Award.

His movie and TV credit embody Quantum Leap, and Touched by an Angel.

He visitor starred as Candy the jazz demon, in Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s musical episode during which his spell forces the characters to sing their greatest secrets and techniques and fears.  

As an acclaimed choreographer he labored on The Golden Globe Awards, Dance in America; the sitcoms Fired Up, Sister, Sister, The Bother with Regular, and The Boys.

He served as Affiliate Choreographer on the sixty fifth and 66th Annual Academy Awards with Debbie Allen.

In 2014, Battle starred within the off-Broadway manufacturing Cindy: The Musical.

His transient singing profession included music  Assume We’re Gonna Make It  which was featured on the soundtrack to  1986 film Taking part in for Retains. He launched one solo album, Untapped, that 12 months.
