Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ post-credits scene, Charlize Theron shares a behind-the-scenes look at her new Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Clea. The sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange continues Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer’s story after Spider-Man: No Way Home and serves as a stepping stone for Marvel Studios’ larger multiverse plans. This included introducing America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) and her multiverse traveling powers, while the exploration of other universes also brought new threats and allies. On top of the highly anticipated and cameo-filled debut of The Illuminati, Doctor Strange 2 is responsible for introducing another major Marvel character. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ post-credits scene sees Doctor Strange encounter a mysterious new sorceress dressed in all purple. While all audiences might not be familiar with the character of Clea, many will recognize the actress playing her: Charlize Theron. Best known for films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and the Fast & Furious franchise, Theron’s debut as Clea came as a big surprise for audiences.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally debuted in theaters, the spoiler shield is starting to lift. Those involved with the movie are starting to talk more openly about the surprises that it contains, and this continues with Theron sharing a behind-the-scenes look at Clea on social media. The close-up photo doesn’t feature Clea’s full purple costume as shown in Doctor Strange 2’s post-credits scene, as the focus is instead kept on the purple makeup and white hair the Academy Award-winning actress wears. Clea’s introduction in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness comes as the MCU teased Doctor Strange’s future. In the comics, Clea is Strange’s main love interest. She is another magic-powered character and comes from the Dark Dimension, where she eventually becomes the ruler. Theron’s Clea appears in the Multiverse of Madness post-credits scene to recruit Strange to help her with an incursion that he caused. They are last seen leaping into the Dark Dimension together, seemingly teasing their potential romance and setting up the events of Doctor Strange 3.
New offers a closer look at Clea as Theron continues to share her excitement over joining the MCU. It is currently unknown what her future looks like beyond Doctor Strange 2. The most logical assumption is that Theron will return as Clea in Doctor Strange 3, but her familiarity with the multiverse and incursions could mean that she also appears in Loki season 2 or another multiverse-related Phase 4 project. In any case, her debut is a tease that this is just the beginning of her MCU story, so Theron should have the opportunity to recapture Clea’s look well beyond Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
